This article will be a little bit different to my other ones but just as relevant. In the last year there has been a rise in environmental warriors, one in particular has gotten a lot of attention, Greta Thunberg. The name shows up almost every day on social media and in news paper. One thing that I have noticed is that she is recieving a lot of hate, in particular from our older generation but I have not been able to figure out why. Let´s dig a little bit deeper into this.

Who Is Greta Thunberg

Greta Thunberg is a young swedish girl, who started her environmental carrier sitting outside of the Swedish parliment, protesting for them to take action against the threats to our environment, this being amongst other climate change.
She started of with a “School strike for the environment” in August of 2018 and now, almost a year later she is estimated to have close to 1.5 million fellow students across the world joining her in her fight for change.

She comes from a fairly impressive family but she has sure taken her own path, equally impressive.

The Greta Thunberg Effect

In a lot of the videos circulating social media you can find a lot of negative comments about Greta Thunberg and the fact that she is taking a stand against climate change. With her young age she has created a movement that is growing in rapid pace, her speeches echoes across the globe.

There is so much evidence showing that global warming is occuring and there is little to no time for change. Still people do not seem to believe it is true but instead asking her to “Shut up”, “Go back to School” and also asking what kind of parents she has that they would allow her to do something like this.

The negative comments that she is recieving, I believe is from people in denial. If you do not admit there is problem you have no accountability in the matter. If you admit there is a problem that means you have to make changes to your life but as long as you ignore it and deny it there will be no need for change because nothing is wrong.
I do believe it is time for people to wake up and see that theire choices do affect their surroundings. Your choices are not just affecting your home but also everyone elses.

Her protests, articles and her leading by example has led her to recieve multiple awards. People follow her because she is a leader and she is leading by doing not just by telling. If it wasn’t for Greta Thunberg I do not think that people would have bothered at all with what is happening to our climate.

In her short year she has held speeches all across the world, asking people to start making changes.
She is putting the politicians in their place with inspiring speeches such as;
“We have not come here to beg the world leaders to care for our future. They have ignored us in the past and they will ignore us again. We have come here to let them know that change is coming whether they like it or not.”

She has recieved awards such as “Most important woman of the year” and the most recent one being ” Ambassador of Conscience award” given by Amnesty international.

She is also nominated for a nobel peace prize for the work she is doing. For free I might add.

“I want you to act as if your house is on fire. Because it is”

She is basically saying that we have done nothing to prevent climate change up until now, merely discussed the matter and then swept it under the rug for our future generations to deal with and now is the time that they will deal with it.

One would hope that with everything that is happening in the world, the fires, the floods etc. that people would realize that things need to change and that we are destroying our home. We are setting it on fire faster than we are exstinguishing it and we have 11 years to act before it will be completely irriversible.

“If we haven’t made the changes required by approximately the year 2030, we will probably set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control. Then we will pass a point of no return which will be catastrophic.”

There is a lot to be done and honsetly, not a lot of time to do it on. Be aware of your choices and change for the better.
